How did you both first get into music?

FH: I used to work at Electra, an institution in London that was moving at the intersection between art, sound and music. I was in my early 20s and the place and the sheer range and depth of new influences shaped me.

How would you describe the music you are presenting at the festival to someone who has never listened to it before?
FH: This is a festival that does not present one category or genre of music. Instead, it’s focused on “musician’s musicians”, people who we would love to see live in Stuttgart and who have a great deal of integrity and depth in their individual expressions.

MP: Weit weg vom Mainstream.

The arts and music scenes are not polarities, but there are shared influences and overlaps.

Why a music festival in an art institution?
FH: Künstlerhaus Stuttgart has a long and important tradition of being an interdisciplinary platform. There are some very exciting overlaps between performance, music, moving image and set design that join together in Zauber der Moderne – formats that all share certain experiential levels. The arts and music scenes are not polarities, but there are shared influences and overlaps. At times, however, there is a lack of a concrete space or situations where different scenes and communities across mediums can join and meet, something we wanted to provide with this festival.

What was the method behind your selection of performers?
FH: The first step was inviting an expert – someone whose understanding of music resonates with my own, and whose knowledge is vast. This is the case with Michael Paukner. He was given a carte blanche and in conversation, a vision started developing of a festival that was dedicated to people whose work we find profoundly exciting, and where there are connections on deeper levels, beyond the more obvious criteria of genre.

Is the ‚hand-made (British) folk music‘ in the lineup to understand as a counter-movement to digitalisation of music?

Music festivals are changing – there are a lot of small ’niche‘ festivals these days – why do you think this is happening?
FH: It is a great way to experience music, for people to come together beyond the format of the mega festival, which at the end of the day tends to turn into a very commercial affair.

MP: Ich schließe mich hier klar Fatimas Antwort an.

What will the festival space look like?
FH: We are working with artists and musicians Julia Lenzmann and Monika Nuber on making a setting, combining functional elements with a sense of “Zauber”. The main space has a large, 33 m painted backdrop made by artist Graham Lambkin, and through work with a combination of practical as well as aesthetic decisions, we are going for a beautiful and at times somewhat absurd setting. The lower floor is a salon, with a cinema, and a space for gathering with food by Björn Luchterhand, the bar is made and run by Moritz Finkbeiner from the Neue Schachtel, who also plays in Metabolismus, amongst other bands.

Where do you see the festival experience going? What do you see for the future of music festivals?

FH: There are some fantastic self-organised festivals, for instance Troglobatem Festival at the Neue Schachtel coming up now 10-12 May, Kraak Festival in Brussels, Eastern Daze in Ghent, and the fantastic festivals at Café Oto in London. I think they are important formats for experiencing live music, but are also meeting points, connecting people and bringing in new influences and evolutions.

What’s your strongest memory of seeing and hearing live music?
FH: I saw a Charlemagne Palestine performance in my early teens – a mysterious, beautiful and bizarre performance that stayed with me in powerful ways. Palestine uses a hypnotic strumming technique and his piano is covered in soft toys, as a very young person it was an uncanny and powerful entry point into a form of music that was precise, and on the edge – an experience that was disorienting, in a good way.

What is the title of the album that touched you most?
FH: ‘Rock Bottom’ by Robert Wyatt is up there.

MP: In diesem Moment denke ich an Mayo Thompson Corky’s debt to his father, ändert sich aber minütlich.
