What was the most wonderful gig you ever played?
We brought Icelandic troubadour Svavar Knútur to our hometown in Virginia a year ago, and having him open for us was one of the greatest experiences we’ve ever had. Unfortunately I watched his set before ours, and I laughed so hard that my voice went hoarse and I could hardly sing. But it was worth it.

Where would you absolutely love to play?
I would love to play above the arctic circle, in Svalbard.

Please describe your worst studio experience.
When recording the vocals for our song Bill Murray back in 2012, I was having trouble singing it well. My producer kept demanding takes, and we spent over four hours recording 30 seconds of vocals. By the end of it, I was so angry that I felt like never listening to the song again. I left the studio very displeased with myself, but at least grateful that it was over. The next morning, I walked into the studio and he was listening to it. He leaned back in his chair, looked at me hesitantly, and said, „It could be better. We need to do it again.“

What would your music sound like if Elvis had never existed?
I figure we’d be playing Dixieland jazz.

The title of the book that touched you most is…
The Lowlands, by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Which ringtone do you use?
Sorry, guys… I use the stock iphone ringtone.

The most beautiful love song ever is called…
Re: Stacks

Which song (except your own songs) do you know by heart?
The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us! by Sufjan Stevens.

What would you be today if you had not become a pop star?
If I hadn’t become such a big star, I guess I’d still be doing small acoustic tours of Europe, playing house concerts with my bandmates. Glad that’s over with!

In which band would you like to play (except your own)?
Sigur Rós.

What’s your favourite instrument?
I like acoustic guitar and bass.

The greatest musical genius (dead or alive)?
Sufjan Stevens.

The most beautiful woman/man in show business?
Sonoya Mizuno.

How would you spend an unexpected gift of 1000 Euro (you’re not allowed to invest in alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, holidays or prostitution)?
I’d do what I always do with my € 1000 gifts — buy my next ticket back to Europe.
